Profile of Ramesh C. Bajpai

Ramesh Bajpai is the founder Executive Director of the American Chamber of Commerce in India (AMCHAM) and set up a full time secretariat of AMCHAM in August 1996. As the first Executive Director Ramesh set up the guidelines for the future of AMCHAM and gave directions to its activities and in raising its profile both with AMCHAM members and with the Government authorities. He organised the work of AMCHAM around several Sectoral Committees, which have very actively interacted with the relevant authorities on issues of concern to the American investors in particular and foreign investors in general.

Ramesh Bajpai has over 45 years of experience in the industry both in India and overseas and has held very senior executive positions in his professional career. He has spent a large part of his professional career with consulting profession. Ramesh worked with the Tata Group for over 14 years. In 1986 he was invited by the Government of India to take over as the Chairman and Managing Director of a sick public sector consulting engineering company with the mandate of turning it around. Under his leadership this company which had been making losses continuously for nearly two decades turned profitable and became a dividend paying company within two years.

Ramesh has also worked as Advisor to the largest business group in the Sultanate of Oman where his responsibilities included managing several of the Group’s 60 Companies, guiding the Group’s Marketing Strategies and helping the growth of some of the Group’s Industrial activities.

Ramesh Bajpai is a graduate of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) and has done the Senior Business Management program of the Henly Management School, England. He has been on the Panel of Consultants of some of the International organisations like United Nations Industrial Development Organisation, Commonwealth Fund for Technical Co-operation, etc. He has represented India on United Nations and World Bank Delegations to East and West Africa for promotion of export of consultancy services. He has also held senior positions in several professional organisations such as

  • President of the National Association of Consulting Engineers of India
  • Member of the Policy Planning Committee of Bureau of Public Enterprises, Government of India
  • Director, Standing Conference of Public Enterprises, India
  • Member of CII’s Technical Services Committee
  • Member of Federation of Indian Export Oraganisation’s Consultancy Services Committee

Ramesh is married with two boys both of whom were educated in USA and work in the Financial Services sector
